1. General Instructions
If the garbage/recycling chute door does not open from your floor, the garbage/recycling system may be in use on another floor. Please allow a few seconds for the system to become operable from your floor. Contact the Front Desk if the system is not operable after a few minutes or a few attempts. When the chute is unavailable for any reason, do not leave any items in the garbage room or corridors. Rather, please bring these items to the Waste Room on garage level P1 and place them in the appropriate garbage or recycling bins.
All items must fit easily into the chute and be properly wrapped or tied up. This includes any type of cardboard, blankets, carpets, clothing, etc. If items are too large for the chute, please bring these items to the Waste Room on garage level P1 and place them in the appropriate larger receptacle.
2. Garbage
Garbage is made up of all non-recyclable items.
- Place all garbage in securely tied bags to fit the size of the chute;
- Push Garbage button and open chute door;
- Ensure light remains on Garbage; if not, close door and wait until Garbage button remains lit when chute door is opened;
- Push your Garbage through the flap, ensuring it does not block chute;
- If disposing large amounts, or physically large items, please bring to the Waste Room on garage level P1 and place items in the appropriate bins rather than sending them down the chute.
Hazardous Waste
Hazardous waste must not be put in the chute, or in garbage bins on garage level P1. Hazardous Waste includes disinfectants, fire extinguishers, fluorescent light bulbs, fungicides / insecticides / pesticides, furniture stripper, oil-based paints, stain, syringes, turpentine, etc.
Hazardous Waste can be disposed of at Ottawa hazardous waste depots (see ottawa.ca/hhw or phone 3-1-1). Batteries and many other items can be returned to take it back retailers. See ottawa.ca/takeitback or phone 3-1-1).
Liquid Latex paint can be recycled. Allow leftover paint to harden with clumping kitty litter and place in garbage. Recycle empty cans.
3. Paper/Cardboard Recycling
- Tie paper/cardboard recyclables together or place in a paper bag;
- Push Paper/Cardboard button and open chute door;
- Ensure light remains on Paper/Cardboard button; if not, close door and wait until Paper/Cardboard button remains lit when chute door is opened;
- Push your Paper/Cardboard through the flap, ensuring it does not block chute;
- If recycling large amounts, or physically large items, please bring to the Waste Room on garage level P1 and place items in the appropriate larger receptacle, rather than sending them down the chute.
Recycle as Paper/Cardboard:
- Newspapers and flyers
- Magazines and catalogues
- Corrugated cardboard
- Telephone books
- Cereal and cracker boxes (liners removed)
- Shoe and laundry detergent boxes
- Fine paper such as writing paper, computer paper, paper pads
- Hard/soft cover books, paper egg cartons, toilet paper, paper towel rolls
- Paper gift wrap, greeting cards
- Clean paper shopping bags or paper packaging
- Frozen dinner boxes and pizza boxes (no pizza please!)
Do Not Recycle as Paper/Cardboard:
Please put these items in your regular garbage:
- Waxed paper
- Cereal and cracker box liners, chip and cookie bags and canisters
- Chocolate bar and candy wrappings
- Wooden clementine and orange crates
- Foil wrapping paper, bows, ribbons
- Plastic of any kind other than that mentioned in Glass/Plastic Recycling below
- Paper and cardboard lined with foil
- Fast food drink cups
- Tissues
4. Glass/Plastic Recycling
- Remove lids, and rinse containers;
- Push Glass/Plastic button and open chute door;
- Ensure light remains on Glass/Plastic; if not, close door and wait until Glass/Plastic button remains lit when chute door is opened;
- Push your Glass/Plastic through the flap, ensuring it does not block chute;
- If recycling large amounts, or physically large items, please bring to the Waste Room on garage level P1 and place items in the appropriate larger receptacle, rather than sending them down the chute.

- Metal cans
- Soft drink cans
- Aluminum containers
- Clean foil
- Empty paint cans with lids removed
- Aerosol cans (empty hair spay, paint, whipping cream)
- Spiral-wound canisters with metal ends (frozen concentrate cans, potato chip tubes)
Plastic
- Plastic bottles, jars and jugs
- Tubs and tub lids (yogurt, sour cream, hand cleaner, margarine containers)
Cartons
Tetra Paks
- Drink boxes, soup boxes, milk boxes
Do Not Recycle as Glass/Plastic:
Please put the following items into your regular garbage:
Glass
- Ceramics such as dishes, cups and pottery
- Other glass such as drinking glasses, window glass, light bulbs, and mirrors
- Fluorescent light bulbs
Meta
